Repin is a Russian artist who preferred porter to all other genres, as well as depicting historical and everyday scenes that reflected the spirit of the era - the past or the contemporary master. Memoirist, rector of the Academy of Arts. Among his students were many talented painters, especially highlighting his contribution to the fate of Serov, to whom he gave private lessons. Repin's paintings are characterized by accuracy, subtlety of look and pen.

Portraits create a certain impression about the character, often emphasized many times, everyone is distinguished by a marked love for people - it is difficult to find unpleasant characters on them.

“Portrait of Mendeleev” is one of many portraits painted by Repin, containing all the features characteristic of his similar works. This is a lively, not iconographic expression of Mendeleev’s face, a thoughtful look to the side, slightly bowed head.

This is the colors neatly flowing into each other, a blurry background, on which a person stands out so that nothing distracts him from his figure, which is central to the picture. Repin is also peculiar to a certain look at the depicted person - so under his brush Mendeleev is primarily an elderly learned man who made many wonderful discoveries and made a significant contribution to science.

This is in the expression on Mendeleev’s face - he thinks over the book, he is focused and detached. It is in his clothes - the professor’s mantle, a traditional quadrangular cap. These are the books accompanying him - two on the table, thick volumes, emphasizing his learnedness, and one in his hands, the pages are held with his palm, so as not to scatter and not close. This is a kind of ceremonial portrait, bringing to the fore not a person in a person, but his main function, which he made the goal of his life.

And Repin managed to show it just fine.
