“The Tower on the Rock near the Bosphorus” is one of Aivazovsky’s paintings, painted in his usual style, so that the sea on it is the main character, occupies the most space and requires the most attention.
His eyes literally attract him - green waves foam, roll onto a high rocky shore, and a ship beats in the waves - like a wounded bird, trying to swim away from the shore, avoiding death on the rocks, but cannot. The element is stronger - pulls, vomits, sails fall and crumple together with ragged rags. Sailors are rescued in the boat - everyone is looking at the ship, it was both his house and friend, but he is already dying and they can no longer save him.
A lonely man stands on stones at the edge of the surf - maybe a sailor who earlier threw himself into the waves and surfaced, maybe someone else, an extra, who heard the groans of a tree beating against the rocks. The old tower looks lazily at the drama unfolding at its foot. On a hill in the distance a city shines with pure, shining whiteness - tall towers, spiers, nice houses. And the whole picture is flooded with golden rays of the dawn sun.
It is huge. It emerges from the horizon, painting the sky in gold, the city in white, and the sea in emerald luster. The waves are full of gold, mixed with blue, it becomes an emerald.
At the same time a very dynamic and dramatic, and very bright picture - this combination seems almost cynical, but the world is just that. Not everyone drowns on rainy nights, the weather is not always suitable for current events, and the sea doesn’t care when throwing a fragile shell on the rocks, the creation of human hands - on an early summer morning or fall day.
The sea is indifferent, because such is its nature. Infinitely distant, wise and changeable, it sharpens the shore, because "A drop is sharpening a stone." Someday, on the cliffs near the Bosphorus, the endless sea will splash - just as it was at the beginning of time.
