Levitan's painting “Evening on the Volga” captivates with its laconicism. Early summer sunset - the sun is covered by clouds, but still light. Twilight is approaching.

The vast expanse of the river surface - just in the distance the Volga merges with the sky on the horizon. It seems that the water surface in front is endless.

The picture is very voluminous and striking in its realism. The view of the majestic river creates the feeling that the viewer is on the banks of the Volga. In the foreground is a gentle beach covered with rare but very bright grass. Near the waterfront, there are several old wooden fishing boats. There are no people near them.

The shore extends far into the picture. It seems that the river is endless, it goes somewhere beyond the edges of the canvas.

Outwardly, the landscape is very calm. But the cold-blue shades that prevail on the canvas evoke tension and sadness. The picture is completely static - you cannot see either wind or river ripples, the surface of the water is like a mirror.
The evening is getting thicker. The viewer will surely feel the coolness of the evening on the river bank, the freshness and smell of mud from the water. Goosebumps run through the skin, as if frozen in shoulders.

The sky is very low, clouds seem to touch the water. The clouds are gloomy, covering the almost already setting sun. But his light still breaks a little behind the clouds before hiding behind the horizon. In the background you can see the shore, it is completely covered by shadow, dusk has already fallen to the far shore.

The picture “Evening on the Volga” carries a deep philosophical sound. The depth of experience, a reflection of loneliness and tension fill the picture. At the same time, the viewer would like to be on the other side, sit on the ground, think about the deep, looking only into the distance - to where the sky connects to the river, where the sun goes down over the horizon, slowly sensing the impending darkness of the night.
