Diego Velazquez is one of the most beloved artists of the world, and besides that, he was such for the king, whom he faithfully served until his death. Drawing portraits of the courtiers, the external gloss and the decor of the huge clubs, the artist never forgot about ordinary people who could never afford such luxury. Therefore, from time to time, the artist's creativity manifested his desire to do something for this people, even if it would be just a picture. Although it is impossible to minimize in this case, since it is not just a picture, but a picture of Velasquez himself.
Two young men sitting at a table covered with a white tablecloth and talking with an old man whom they apparently invited to their breakfast - this is the foreground of the picture. The artist skilfully portrayed the faces of the drinkers, young people smile and make toasts, which can be understood from the fact that the cups are full and raised, and the waiter is waiting behind to fill them again.
The old man, on the other hand, looks at them as if from some distance, just as old age looks at youthful, vibrant key. The figures in the foreground are highlighted and the viewer can clearly see them, everything else is darkened, and it is not even clear that there, in the background, it’s really a waiter’s figure, a roofing pile of things. Light falls only on the figures in front, and according to the artist’s idea, there is a contrast of light and darkness, youth and old age.
According to the assumptions of the researchers, portraying one of the young youths, the artist gave him the features of his own face.
The painting "Breakfast" was painted around 1617, and fully complies with all the canons of Spanish painting of that time, since all objects are saturated with rigor and proportionality, starting from the still life image and ending with writing out the faces of those present.
