“Self-portrait” (another name for the painting “Self-portrait in clothes trimmed with fur”) is one of the artist’s famous paintings, which has long been kept in his family and not intended for the general public.

In the self-portrait, we still see a fairly young man with a beautiful face (the artist was not even 30 years old when writing the work). His smart and slightly tired eyes carefully look at the viewer, his plump lips framed by a small beard and mustache indicate sensuality and a thirst for love. Curled hair in neat locks descends below the shoulders on expensive fur-trimmed clothes, the right hand is raised to the chest.

Durer's innovation was the full-face portrayal of himself in a secular portrait (recall that during this period (1500), figures in secular portraits were depicted in profile or in half-profile and only religious images could be executed in the full-face manner).

A similar image directly intersects with the icon-painting image of Jesus Christ, especially since one can notice the similarity of the artist’s face and the Savior’s appearance (the same long wavy hair, a small beard and mustache, a thin face with classic features, etc., inscriptions on the portrait as on icon on the right and left side of the picture). Similar artistic canvases were characteristic of Renaissance artists, proclaiming the ideal of man, comparing him with the earthly god.

Thus, the artist elevates himself as a representative of this new time, which puts on the pedestal a man-creator (not without reason he paints so carefully his right hand, which created this image). According to the memoirs of his contemporaries, he himself admitted that he wanted to perpetuate his name and young face by writing it with “eternal colors”, which death cannot erase.
