This picture was born thanks to Albert Levine, producer of the film “Dear Friend”. The film required the image of a saint who was constantly exposed to various temptations.
Many artists and painters of that time took part in the competition, and outstanding artists and the creative elite were members of the jury. The victory was not won by Salvador Dali, but by an emigrant from Europe.
St. Anthony is a hermit who lived in the 4th century. As you know, he was often tormented by nightmare visions that came to him at night. Ascetic, as a rule, terrible demons or seductive women tortured or tempted.
This plot was quite popular in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, then they forgot about the image of St. Anthony and remembered it again in the middle of the 20th century. However, Salvador Dali presented a classic biblical story in his unique style and image, which he differs from other great artists.
In this picture, a certain average dimension between heaven and earth is easily traced, which is clearly manifested in the long and thin legs of elephants. The figure of the main character, St. Anthony, is in the left corner, and the central place of the canvas is occupied by the very temptations to which the hermit is exposed.
The first in this string is a rearing horse, symbolizing sensual pleasure and unrivaled power. This is followed by elephants with thin and long legs: at the first on the back there is a bowl of Desire with a naked figure of a woman, at the second there is an obelisk, and at the last there is an architectural composition in the style of Palladio on their backs.
In the background of the painting “The Temptation of St. Anthony” you can see Escorial, which is a symbol of a harmonious combination of spiritual and secular order.
It is from this picture, according to many researchers and experts, that a new branch of the great artist, Salvador Dali, begins. This trend is a synthesis of three elements: spiritualism, classical painting and the atomic era.
